Intro to Cultural Tourism

Intro to Cultural Tourism is a short, skills-based program designed for anyone wanting to engage respectfully and knowledgeably with Australian Indigenous culture in a tourism, hospitality, or community context. This course combines practical skills in interpreting and sharing Aboriginal cultural knowledge with an understanding of the cultural protocols that underpin respectful engagement. On successful completion, students receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following units:

• SITTGDE013 – Interpret aspects of local Australian Indigenous culture
• SITTGDE019 – Research and share information on Australian Indigenous cultures
• AHCOCM303 – Follow cultural protocols

Across this course, students will develop the skills to:

• Identify and interpret key aspects of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture relevant to a tourism or visitor context
• Source accurate, appropriate information about Australian Indigenous cultures from credible channels, including community and cultural sources
• Present and share cultural information with visitors, clients, or community members in a respectful, accurate, and engaging way
• Recognise and follow appropriate cultural protocols when working with or alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities, and knowledge
• Understand the importance of seeking guidance from Traditional Owners and community representatives, and know when and how to do so

This course is delivered in a hybrid format, combining flexible online learning with face-to-face, in-class sessions. Online components allow students to work through theory and research tasks at their own pace, while in-class workshops provide the opportunity for hands-on practice, group discussion, and direct guidance from trainers and cultural advisors. This blended approach ensures students gain both the flexibility of online study and the richness of in-person learning and cultural engagement.
